Amazon Eliminates Singles use Plastic from Packaging

Amazon, India’s biggest e-commerce service on Monday announced that it has now eliminated single-use plastic from its packaging. This move follows the pledge to go plastic-free taken by the company in September last year. The company made a pledge to meet this goal by June this year. In December 2019 they replaced plastic packaging material like bubble wraps and air pillows with paper cushions.

This decision comes after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s directive last year. He urged Indians to put an end to the usage of single-use plastic by 2022. The initiative was taken to reduce pollution across the country.

Our aim is to minimize environmental impact while elevating the customer experience. While navigating through unprecedented challenges with the lockdown and pandemic in the last few months, we have continued to take progressive steps towards ensuring that we meet our commitment,” said Prakash Kumar Dutta, director of Customer Fulfillment & Supply Chain at Amazon India, in a statement.

Amazon in the past has been criticised for using too much plastic and thermocol to wrap its billions of packages of shipments. Amazon has about 50-plus fulfilment centres in India. All of these centres will follow the new guidelines. This is a great initiative taken by Amazon, a US-based company to improve help improve the environment in India.

Flipkart, a local rival to Amazon, said last month that it had cut down the usage of plastic packaging in its own supply chain to about 50%. https://bit.ly/2ZG6uJt
