Smart TV sales hit an all-time high in 2019
Smart TVs are the new smartphones. With ever-increasing sales and an influx of Chinese brands, the Smart TV segment is now as hot as it has ever been. Smart TV sales reached their highest ever 15 million units in 2019. That’s a 15% increase from 2018 according to a report by Counterpoint Research. And Chinese companies are taking a big share of this bigger pie.
There are several reasons why Indians are shifting to Smart TVs. Affordability of these Smart TVs is definitely one of the factors driving the surge in sales. Another reason can be the increase in consumption of content on OTT services like Netflix, Amazon and Disney+. With shows tailor-made for the Indian audience, these services have seen a growth in their audience.
According to Senior Analyst, Karn Chauhan India has a much larger potential for Smart TV sales as he says “India is one of the largest markets in the world with more than 200 million potential TV households and is still underpenetrated which makes India a more attractive growth market for the entire TV and content value chain. The growing number of smartphone users in India is also driving a need for Smart TV as users look to continue their streaming content consumption on the bigger screens when at home. The broader broadband penetration in the home will further drive the overall smart TV usage. Though affordability and value for money are the key growth drivers. The new crop of brands
such as Xiaomi, TCL and others are tapping their existing relationships with e-commerce channels such as Flipkart, Amazon, etc to successfully distribute the TVs affordably with a direct-to-consumer model“
Samsung continues to be the leader in the overall TV market but the emerging Smart TV segment is being driven by the newer players. Major smartphone brands have entered the Smart TV market. The leader in the Smart TV market is Xiaomi.
Xiaomi witnessed a 40% YoY growth in 2019. Xiaomi, in fact, is now the leader in the smart TV space with its aggressive offerings luring customers in droves. Last year OnePlus also made an entry with its first Smart TV. Which due to its high price failed to perform in the Indian market. This year OnePlus is coming back with its budget Smart TV with an expectation to woo the Indian consumer. Realme is another new player in the Indian Smart TV market. https://bit.ly/3fIPWqi
